Constructed of sturdy black plastic with a steel band accent, the body of the TCM700 looks sleek and professional, like a tool designed for the kitchen. On the front of the brew basket, there's a see-through plastic water fill indicator, with measure lines that take into account the extra water needed to brew a cup of coffee. The two main highlights of the Black & Decker TCM700 are its thermal carafe and its programmable timer. The carafe is stainless steel, with a black plastic handle and brew-through lid. The lid locks on airtight to keep coffee hot for up to four hours. A pop-up button on top of the lid allows for pouring and for Black & Decker's Sneak-A-Cup feature; this allows impatient caffeine cravers to interrupt brewing in order to, well, sneak a cup of coffee. A clock and timer display is on the front of the coffeemaker, along with a four-button touchpad: On/Off, Program, Hour, and Minute. The timer can be programmed to start brewing at a given time-first thing in the morning, for instance. A hinged lid allows access to the TCM700's removable brew basket, which slide-locks into place for brewing. The removable brew basket is dishwasher safe (top rack). Hand wash carafe in hot water with a soft sponge and mild detergent; do not use abrasive cleansers or scrubbers on carafe. Rinse the brew basket and carafe thoroughly to ensure purity of coffee flavor. Wipe down the coffeemaker with a warm, damp cloth and dry completely; coffeemaker is not immersible. The carafe measures 8-1/4 by 6 by 6-3/4 inches and has a 5-cup (40-fluid-ounce) capacity. (An 8-cup coffeemaker produces 8 5-ounce cups. ) The coffeemaker measures 11 by 8 by 14-1/2 inches. To preserve the gloss of the stainless steel, do not use steel wool or harsh, abrasive cleansers. The perk spout and filter basket can be cleaned with a brush or pipe cleaner.
